CONSULTATION

As each patient is a unique individual with different needs, consultations are essential. During the consultation the physician will discuss issues with the patient such as medical history, lifestyle and their current concerns among many others. This information is necessary as practitioners of natural health as Traditional Chinese Medicine look to treat the root cause of the problem and not just its apparent symptoms.

DIAGNOSE

Within Traditional Chinese Medicine, there are many diagnostic methods. All of which carry their own philosophy and execution. To start with there are the different forms of examination such as, an overall inspection, auscultation and smelling, interrogation, pulse feeling and palpitation. After a thorough examination these is also the analytical phase where the physician must consider the differences within the eight principal syndromes, the visceral syndromes, the syndromes of vital energy, blood and fluids and meridian syndromes. The possibility of epidemic and exogenous fibril diseases must also be considered and analyzed according to the theory of the six meridians, as well as many other theories based upon information provided by the patient during the consultation. After this process the physician will recommend the appropriate treatment regime.

TREATMENT

Patient treatment can take many forms; from acupuncture and diet adjustment to using Chinese herbals and nutritional supplementation, as well as the promotion of healthy thoughts and belief. The ultimate goal of these treatments is to achieve balance of the patients yin and yang as well as blood and chi of all organ systems. The balancing of these properties is essential to treating the root cause of the patient’s alignments.

testimonials

DENISE S., VANCOUVER

“In trying to find help with my head injury, I went to a number of highly respected neurologists trying to find relief. Every single one of the neurologists I saw told me that they could do nothing for me and that I could only find minimal relief from ibuprofen…that I had to live with the rest of my symptoms. Dr. Felicia has spent time, energy and care helping to provide relief for my injury, and by having acupuncture appointments every 4-6 weeks, the swelling in my skull is substantially reduced with each visit, as are my various symptoms. Even during our acupuncture treatment, swelling is reduced roughly 75%, and ongoing visits help improve my energy, memory, mood and provide pain management, allowing me to have a much more normal life. I could not imagine life without acupuncture, and I could not imagine a more gentle, caring and kind doctor to put my trust in.”

L. N., VANCOUVER (Part 1)

“I was recommended to see Dr. Felicia by a close friend a year ago. I am deeply grateful for the introduction, and to Dr. Felicia for the immense help she has given me this past year. Two years prior to seeing Dr. Felicia, I was feeling extremely tired and had very little energy. I saw several OBGYNs who informed me that I was undergoing hormonal changes, which is not uncommon for women of my age. They told me that I should simply accept this as the next stage in my life, and to do what I can to improve other areas of my life such as diet and exercise. While lifestyle changes are definitely important, I believe that there are fundamental steps that can, and should also be taken to help improve one’s baseline health. Dr. Felicia has extraordinary training in both Western and Chinese medicine.  (continue…)

L. N., VANCOUVER (Part 2)

“(…continue) In her practice she brings out the best of each of these cultures, and uses a combination of Western vitamins and traditional Chinese herbs to treat her patients as required. My overall health has greatly improved this past year, and I have noticed a big difference in my energy level and strength.  My family members have commented that it’s lovely to see Mom back to her good old self! Moreover, Dr. Felicia is one of the most caring and patient doctors I have met. Her genuine care and follow-up are invaluable assets that are lacking in our public healthcare system! Every time I meet with Dr. Felicia, she takes the time to examine meand explains her diagnosis and solution.  (…continue)

L. N., VANCOUVER (Part 3)

“(…continue) I am most appreciative of her patience and willingness to educate her patients so that they know how to, and are motivated to look after themselves better. She books follow-up appointments so that she can reassess her patients over time; this post-consultation follow-up is what struck me most about her practice. Knowing that Dr. Felicia is there for me, and that I can count on her, has given me great assurance as I enter into the “dreaded next stage of forties”, when women’s bodies undergo great hormonal changes! Thank you, Dr. Felicia, for educating me to be proactive in coping with the changes in my body, and for equipping me with the supplements and knowledge that I need to manage the next stage with confidence! I am most grateful to you!

KATHERINE L., VANCOUVER

“I have been going to Felicia for nearly 5 years for health advice and have always found her to be a wealth of knowledge and patience. Her Chinese herbals are amazing and I always make a point to see her when I am down with the flu or am in need of advise.”

MRS. LEE

“When I saw Dr. Fu the 1st time I already tried more than 1/2 a year to conceive my second child. After I followed Dr. Fu’s recommendation of her combined Chinese herbal medicine and vitamins I conceived my daughter about 2 months later. My second experience with Dr. Fu happened 3 years ago. I wanted to try to have a boy this time and again after taking a combination of her Chinese herbal medicine plus vitamins I had my son. Thank you Dr. Fu.”

JOYCE LOW, VANCOUVER

“Supplements Plus is a most unique shop, combining both a clinic and a health food and supplements store, served by Dr. Felicia Fu (drfeliciafu.com). I have been attending Dr. Fu as a patient for more than ten years. During that time she has become a valued friend and advisor, assisting me in making good choices with regard to my health and nutrition as well as diagnosing weaknesses and areas of my body that need to be addressed by herbal remedies and acupuncture. She is always ready to listen and discuss any concerns I may have, and keeps detailed records of my progress. Her skill and ability, combined with sincere compassion for the needs of her patients is very evident. I always look forward to each appointment, and leave feeling stronger and refreshed. I believe that the good health I enjoy at age 76, without having need for any prescription medications, is largely due to the care and treatments I have had from Dr. Fu.”

MYRA BUCKLEY, RICHMOND

“I have known Felicia for many years and after trying other acupuncturists , I have to say I feel safe and comfortable with her doing my treatments. I suffer from chronic pain tension/migraine headaches for over 20 years. When I receive her treatments, I feel the release and opening up of my points. I am also able to go into a meditative stage and feel re-energized, relaxed and rejuvenated after each treatment. I have to say it is a natural high or euphoric experience for me. I highly recommend her.”

frequent asked questions

WHAT IS TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE?

Traditional Chinese medicine includes four distinct divisions, namely, herbology, acupuncture, manipulative therapy and food cures; in addition, there are remedial exercises, qui-gong and tai-chi which are generally regarded as extra curriculums.

WHEN AND HOW WAS TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE ORIGINALLY DISCOVERED?

Traditional Chinese medicine has a history of over 3,000 years, it was not discovered by any particular individual; rather, it had been developed out of the necessity of maintaining good health among the Chinese people. The ancient Chinese, like all of us, had to struggle against diseases in order to stay in good health and in the process, they accumulated valuable experiences by consuming herbs (known as Chinese herbology, inserting needles in the body (Chinese acupuncture), eating the right foods (Chinese food cures), massaging the body (known as manipulative-Tui Na therapy today), exercising the body (qi-gong and tai-chi).

IS TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE STILL PRACTICE IN CHINA TODAY?

Very much so. It is practiced side by side with modern medicine; in China, there as many hospitals of traditional Chinese medicine as modern hospitals of Western medicine. From the Chinese point of view, traditional Chinese medicine is on an equal footing with Western medicine; in fact, many Chinese value traditional Chinese medicine more than Western medicine.

WHY DO WESTERN PEOPLE NEED TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE AS MUCH AS MODERN SCIENTIFIC MEDICINE?

The reason is that some diseases cannot be treated by Western medicine or drugs but can be treated successfully by Chinese medicine. It is a fact that many patients experience instant relief of pain by Chinese acupuncture, which cannot be achieved by Western medicine. It is also a fact that traditional Chinese medicine had been proven superior to Western medicine for many diseases, notably, skin diseases, liver diseases and kidney diseases to mention only a few.

HOW DOES TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE WORK?

A traditional Chinese medicine practitioner (R.TCM.P) will first make diagnosis before treating a patient. When you go to see a R.TCM.P, you will notice that practitioner will observe your complexion and look at your tongue, take your pulse, ask you many questions about your symptoms, your eating habits and your preferences etc and then the practitioner will come up with a diagnosis of what is wrong with your body and tell you whether you need acupuncture or herbs and what foods are good for you, etc.

WHAT DISEASES CAN BE TREATED BY TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE?

In China, virtually all kinds of diseases are being treated by traditional Chinese medicine. Some disease may be more effectively treated by acupuncture while other may be more effectively treated by herbs, still others may be treated by food cures. In general, pain and muscular symptoms may be more effectively treated by acupuncture while skin diseases may be treated by herbs; however, it is necessary to make the diagnosis before deciding what type of treatment is more effective for you. When a medical doctor tells a patient that there is no cure for his or her diseases in question cannot be cured by traditional Chinese medicine. It only means that there is no cure for the disease by Western medicine.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN DIFFERENCES BETWEEN TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE AND WESTERN MEDICINE?

There are a number of basic differences between the two distinct types of treats symptoms, whereas traditional Chinese medicine treats the causes of symptoms. Secondly, Western medicine is more useful in first-aid and surgery, whereas traditional Chinese medicine is more useful in dealing with skin and internal diseases, chronic disease in particular. Thirdly, many remedies in Western medicine are based upon the results of experiments on animals which may not be effective on the human body, but remedies of traditional Chinese medicine are based upon successful experiences on clinical practice which are more reliable. Fourthly, most Western chemical drugs are more drastic in action and tend to produce serious side effects. On the other hands, Chinese herbs and acupuncture and food cures are not drastic in action and have long-lasting effects and besides, they generally do not produce side effects when used properly.

DO I NEED TO CONSULT A MEDICAL DOCTOR BEFORE COMING TO SEE A REGISTERED TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE PRACTITIONER (R.TCM.P)?

Although traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine operate very differently, it is better for you to consult your medical doctor whenever possible in order to get a diagnosis which may be of some use to a registered traditional Chinese medicine practitioner; however, some medical doctors do not know much about traditional Chinese medicine. It is important to remember that your health is your own responsibility; you should make your own decision on whether or not you want to consult a R.TCM.P.

HOW CAN I MAKE A WISE DECISION SINCE I KNOW SO LITTLE ABOUT TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE?

You can do so by asking your friends who may know more about traditional Chinese medicine or someone who had been treated by traditional Chinese medicine. A typical Chinese patient in China will tell you that he made a decision to see a R.TCM.P., either because his friends or relatives with similar health problems have been cured by traditional Chinese medicine or because he believes more in natural healing based upon past clinical experiences than modern medicine based upon laboratory experiment. Either of the above two reasons can also be a good reason for you to consult a Registered Traditional Chinese Practitioner (R.TCM.P).

WHERE CAN I FIND A REGISTERED TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE PRACTITIONER?

You can find one from local yellow pages normally under the healing of “acupuncturists” or herbalists. The best way is to ask your friends to recommend one for you. Do not forget to tell your friends about it after you have been helped by traditional Chinese medicine. This time-honored Chinese healing art definitely needs your help to become an established health profession in our society.
